art & artisan research trip to oaxaca

Having spent the past few years working at the intersection of art, design, and the process of collaborating with artisans, it was time to witness a cultural capitol for all three of the above: Oaxaca City, Mexico. I spent a week visiting artist studios, print workshops, galleries, artist residencies, schools for art, and numerous other institutions that act as an intersection between artisans. In fact, Oaxaca had one of the most impressive and well-formed discourses concerning artisan representation and wellbeing that I have encountered, as well as the role of the artist in a healthy, creative community. This brief research trip definitely resulted in some inspirational next steps for learning from this city’s creatives.
